DESCRIPTION: Rumours have always left an enigmatic trace through history. Beginning in Greek antiquity and culminating in a discussion of the rumour in the technological age, Hans- Joachim Neubauer takes the reader on a tour of its historical and cultural manifestations. Seeking out choice examples from such diverse areas as the poetry of Chaucer, the French Revolution, the American Civil War, through to the internet, Monica Lewinsky and urban myths, the author examines the conditions that breed rumours and explores the way they have been represented in art and literature.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Hans-Joachim Neubauer was born in 1960 and lives in Berlin. For his first book Jewish Characters - Drama and Theatre in the Early 19th Century he was awarded the 1994 Joachim Tiburtas Prize.

REVIEW: With great precision Neubauer gets to the heart of individual instances of the rumour and exposes the mechanisms that lend the rumour its dynamism. These stories behind the story make his book a real treasure trove, and not just for cultural historians (Urs Willmann, Die Zeit).
